Abortion! Right or Wrong?

By Leonard “Buck” Groves

When we try to answer the above question, or any such questions, we must not base our conclusion on what is popular or what the majority says about the matter.  We must draw our conclusion on “What saith the scripture” (Galatians 4:30).  Questions like, “What is abortion?” or “What does the Bible say about abortion?” and even, “What can I do about it?” need to be addressed.  The Bible nowhere says, “Thou shall not have an abortion,” but Bible principles do teach that abortion is wrong and that it is an abomination to God.

Our nation was founded upon the idea of “in God we trust.”  However, our country is shamed when we pass laws that would fine a person up to $5,000.00 for destroying an eagle’s egg, and yet legalize taking an unborn child’s life.  On January 22, 1973, our U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the killing of an unborn baby is an act protected by the Constitution of the United States.  The Justices decided that the unborn child is not a person in any meaningful or whole sense and therefore not protected by the Fourteenth Amendment.  What is abortion?  It is the killing of an unborn child.

The main issue, then, is just when does life begin?  Please consider this.  It is a scientific fact that human life begins at conception.  When the 23 chromosomes of the male sperm unite with the 23 chromosomes of the female ovum, a new being is created.  From this point (conception) not one thing from the mother or the father will be added to this new being except nutrition.

God gives life and breath to all things (Acts 17:25b).  When abortions are performed life is taken and innocent blood is shed.  The wise man Solomon wrote in Proverbs 6:16-17: “These six things doth the Lord hate, yea seven are an abomination unto him.  A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood.”

Even those who advocate abortions state that there is life of some kind there though they refuse to acknowledge that it is human life.  However, it is a fact that human life begins at conception.  After from 18 to 25 days, the heart begins to beat.  After six weeks, if the baby’s lip is tickled, he will pull away.  After eight weeks he or she will grab and hold on to things (visible in a sonogram).  After 10 weeks the baby has fingerprints.  After 12 weeks the baby swallows, sleeps, wakes and sucks his thumb.

Beyond 12 weeks nothing new is formed.  The baby grows rapidly until the ninth month when he will exit the womb, breathe air and take food now by mouth.  Life is continuation of growth from conception until death.  The Bible states in James 2:26 that the body without the spirit is dead.  Now I ask you, when Mary was found with child (Jesus), did she have life within her?  If Mary had obtained an abortion, would she have taken a life?  Since Jesus is eternal and part of the Godhead, then from this consideration, too, he was alive in Mary’s womb.

A woman wants the right to control her own body, but the unborn child is not her body!  The mother is just nourishing the baby until he or she can take care of himself or herself.  In 1 Corinthians 6:19 the apostle Paul penned:  “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?”  God owns both the body of the mother and of the unborn child.  We must answer to God for what we do to our bodies, or to the bodies of others.

There is a difference between the mother and the baby.  The baby can have another blood type than the mother or be a different sex than the mother.  Even the genetic code of the unborn child is different from the mother’s genetic code.

The churches of Christ are not alone in opposing abortion.  A recent poll in our country about the subject of abortion shows that 68% are opposed to abortion.  The churches of Christ pray that the laws of our good country will someday be changed to protect babies from abortion.  Abortion kills innocent babies!
