One of my favorite children’s songs has always been the
song that bears the same title of this article. In that wonderful,
easily
understood song there is part of a verse that reads, “When I
see the little
lilies pushing up the heavy sod, I marvel at the wisdom of my
God.” Spring is
such a wonderful time of the year! Precious flowers are now blooming
where snow
and ice recently rested. Spring frogs sing their melodious chant at
dusk and
birds recite their tunes early in the morning hours. What a precious
privilege
it is to be alive and well in this renewed season called spring.
God’s wisdom
in any season can be seen, but to me personally, a special part of His
wisdom
is witnessed during this glorious time of the year. What can we see
concerning
the wisdom of God during spring?
In the first place, we see God’s Wisdom is not
affected by time. Although winter’s cold and
gloomy days often seem
unending, God’s wisdom is not affected in the least bit, no
matter how long a
period of time passes. In due time, the flowers still bloom, the frogs
still
chant and the birds still sing! Interestingly, we as humans often get
the idea
that God and His wisdom are affected by time. Was that not what some,
during
Peter’s day, were falsely affirming? “Knowing this
first, that there shall come
in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for
since the fathers
fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the
creation” (2 Peter 3:3-4, emp. added). These
scoffers falsely concluded
that God’s wisdom is bound by time, and since time had
passed, Christ was not
coming again. Nevertheless, the Holy Spirit through the pen of the
apostle
Peter clearly refuted their false assumption by writing,
“But, beloved, be not
ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand
years,
and a thousand years as one day” (2 Peter 3:8). Simply
stated, time does not
affect God’s wisdom! Our beloved Father in heaven wears no
wristwatch! In
spring, when I see the little lilies pushing up the heavy sod, truly I
marvel
at the wisdom of my God and how His wisdom is not affected by time!
In the second place, we see God’s wisdom is not
deterred by circumstances. No matter how cold or snowy
winter may be,
springtime will still come. The gloomy, dismal, cold days of winter
will not
prevent the glorious, dazzling, warm days of spring. Circumstances, no
matter
how good or bad, do not affect God’s wisdom. What an
encouragement this is to
those who spread the Gospel. Although sin is present on every side of
humanity,
and it appears that the world around us continues to progressively wax
worse,
God’s wisdom is not affected by these or any other
circumstances. The Gospel, even
in the midst of a seemingly uninterested, non-spiritual world, is still
powerful and able to save those who obey (cf. Romans 1:16-17; Hebrews 5:9).
It reminds me of what God, through the great Prophet Isaiah guaranteed,
“For as
the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not
thither, but
watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give
seed to
the sower, and bread to the eater: So
shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return
unto me
void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it
shall prosper in
the thing whereto I sent it” (Isaiah 55:10-11, emp added). In
spring, when I
see the little lilies pushing up the heavy sod, truly I marvel at the
wisdom of
my God and how His wisdom is not affected by circumstances!
Spring, what a time of refreshing, renewal and
reopening our eyes to the great wisdom of our Heavenly Father! When
you, dear
reader, behold the beauties of spring, I hope you too see
God’s wisdom. “When I
see the little lilies pushing up the heavy sod, I marvel at the wisdom
of my
God!”
